home security monitoring burglar alarm adt brinks repair installation

We may repeat some points to emphasize them...!

Doors should be locked at all times.

Good quality deadbolts should be on all entrance doors.

Reinforce all strike plates with at least 2.5' screws.

Peepholes must be accessible to all residents.

            Basement windows should have guards.

Patio doors must be secured with a stick, or other options.

Know who has any keys to your home.

Only put your first initial on your mailbox and in the phone book.

Motion detector lighting is a good deterrent in the yard.

Get to know you neighbors and become a member of Block
watch and your community association.

Have a safe room with a phone, solid core door, good lock and escape route.

Do not open your door to anybody you do not know.

Make sure shrubbery is trimmed away from basement windows and access points to the home.

Exterior Doors
We always lock all our doors at night and every time we leave the house.
Our doors are solid hardwood or metal-clad.
Our doors feature wide-angle peepholes.
If there are glass panels in or near our door, they are reinforced in some way so they can't be shattered.
All entryways to our home have a working, keyed entry lock and deadbolt lock.
Our deadbolt locks offer high-security features
Garage and Sliding Door Security
The door leading from the attached garage to the house is protected with a quality, keyed door lock and deadbolt
We have a lock for the garage door and do not rely on the automatic opener to provide security.
We make sure the garage doors are locked when leaving the house.
The sliding glass door (if there is one) has strong, working locks or we use a device such as a security bar for protection.
We always check to make sure the sliding door is locked at night and when leaving the house.
Protecting Windows
Every window in the house has a working lock
We always lock the windows, even when they are opened a few inches for ventilation.
Outdoor Lighting
We trim the bushes and shrubs so there is no place for someone to hide.
There are no dark areas around our house, garage or yard.
The light bulbs for our outdoor areas are in good working order.
We use floodlights to ensure effective illumination.
We always turn on the outdoor lights in the evening - whether someone is at home or not (or use a photocell or motion-sensitive lighting system)
Security Away From Home
When leaving home, we have at least two light timers that are set to turn the lights on and off in a logical sequence.
When leaving home, we activate the motion detector or other alarm system (if we have one).
When away from home, we always stop the mail and newspaper deliveries.
When away from home, we ask a neighbor to tend the yard and watch our home.
Personal Property and Outdoor Valuables
Gate latches, and garage and shed doors are all locked with high-security, laminated padlocks.
We always lock gate, garage and shed doors after every use.
Grills, lawn mowers and other valuables are stored in a locked garage or shed, or if left out in the open, are hidden from view with a tarp and securely locked to a stationary point.
Every bicycle is secured with a lock or quality padlock and chain.
We always lock our bikes, even if we leave them for "just a minute."
Firearms are stored unloaded and locked in storage boxes or secured with lock

Be Watchful While Walking Outdoors Send Info

  • Avoid walking or jogging alone, especially at night. Stay in well-traveled areas.
  • Wear clothes and shoes that allow freedom of movement.
  • Be careful if someone in a car asks you for directions--be sure to keep your distance from the car.
  • Have your key ready before you reach the door.
  • If you think you are being followed, change directions.  If the person is still there, head for an open store, restaurant, gas station or lighted house. (Do not try to make it home.)
  • Do not hitchhike, and do not pickup hitchhikers.

Bike Riding

  • Be sure your children know the rules of the road and follow them.
  • Be sure you know where your children will be bike riding.
  • If you or your children ride at night, be sure to wear reflective clothing and use a light.
  • Trail bikes and mountain biking have become very popular. Go mountain biking with friends and let another person know where you will be.
  • Do not ride a trail bike alone -- you could be without help if you sustain a fall.
  • Mountain bikes are also special targets for thieves, be extra sure to lock your mountain bike.
  • If you ride a bike, always lock it up--even if you step inside a store or your house for "just a moment."
  • If you carry a pack or water bottle on your bike, take them with you when you stop.

When Traveling on Vacation  Send Info

Be sure to alert a neighbor that you will be gone and ask them to watch your house. Also, have them gather your mail each day.

  • If you will be gone for an extended length of time, be sure your neighbor or a lawn service cuts your grass. This will give your home a "lived-in" look.
  • Re-set your light timers. As daylight lengthens, you'll need to set the timers later in the evening. Also, buy two timers so you can alternate the lights.
  • If you rent a car, be sure to keep maps, luggage and other items that indicate you are a "tourist" out of sight. Thieves tend to look for out-of-towners as they can be easier marks.
  • In a hotel, do not let strangers in your room. If someone claims to be from the hotel, call the front desk first to check on their identity.
  • Always keep your room locked--even if you only step out for ice.
  • When traveling, check with the front desk about your destination and be sure you know where you are going. Avoid areas in the city that could be dangerous.
  • Do not flash money, expensive cameras or jewelry.  Send Info
